Students design city landmark cakes for 200Columbus Bicentennial Birthday Celebration
Competition kicks off Thursday morning and continues through Friday afternoon
(COLUMBUS, OH) – It’s a contest that’s been 200 years in the making. As the City of Columbus prepares to celebrate its bicentennial, baking and pastry arts students at Columbus State Community College will compete in a very unique cake design contest for the Birthday Celebration event on Feb. 10.
Giant Eagle has donated over 150 sheet cakes, 500 pounds of icing and other décor elements for the project. In addition, the professional bakers from Giant Eagle will create one of the iconic landmark cakes and the Official Bicentennial Birthday Cake. Students will design and craft the remaining 31 cakes. What makes this competition unique is that each and every cake will be different as students replicate Columbus landmarks. From the LeVeque Tower to the Ohio Statehouse and beyond, the edible entries will be iced and decorated, allowing each students’ artistic and pastry skills to be showcased. Some cakes may stretch six feet long and a couple of feet high.
The competition will begin on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 9 a.m. at the site of the celebration: Battelle Grand at The Greater Columbus Convention Center, 400 North High Street, Columbus. Pastry work will end at 7 p.m. then continue on Friday from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Judging will take place Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. The 10 judges include faculty and staff from Columbus State, pastry experts from Giant Eagle, and an architect. The cakes will be on display during the official 200Columbus Bicentennial Birthday Celebration which kicks off at 6 p.m. Before the night is over, the cakes will be served to an estimated 3,000 guests.
Students with the winning designs will receive a total of $8,000 in scholarship funds to apply toward their education. The scholarships include three Gold awards of $1,200, three Silver awards of $1,000 and a single scholarship of $1,400 for Best in Show.
