Four winners of the Greater Columbus Arts Council’s “Celebrate Columbus in Song” contest will perform Tuesday, November 20 at The Basement
Xclaim Dance will pay homage to Columbus' Bicentennial with "Soul of the City," which will be performed at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 26 and 27, and 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28. The performance "celebrates the city of Columbus, the movements and mindsets that shaped generations," according to the troupe's website.
Fifty years ago–during Columbus’s sesquicentennial–the October 14th issue of Columbus Dispatch Magazine included an interesting feature looking at the “Columbus of the future.” The article, titled “Columbus looks ahead,” featured experts discussing the changes the capital city could expect over the next half century. The illustrations of the city in 1992 included visions of the city 500 years after its namesake landed in the Americas, while other predictions revolved around how Columbus would be different by the year 2000. The installation of public art in Downtown Columbus has been on a roll in 2012 thanks to the Finding Time project, and the newest addition to the series is titled ”Buckle”, created by local artist Candace Black.

The latest Downtown public artwork display was launched on Tuesday evening as the CAP UP project was officially unveiled. Ten storefront windows were converted into temporary sidewalk-facing galleries where local artists have installed three dimensional displays that celebrate 200Columbus, the city’s bicentennial. In addition to Tuesday’s unveiling, prizes were awarded to the best displays as judged by a panel of jurors. Criteria for judging was based on quality of work, technical skill, appropriateness of space and inclusion of the 200Columbus theme.

As part of Columbus’ Bicentennial celebration, “Finding Time: Columbus Public Art 2012” joined with Brooklyn artist Janet Zweig and local organization TRANSIT ARTS to bring a new public art project to the capital city. “Columbus Never…” is a public art project conceived by Zweig that, once completed, will be a generative sentence that will change over time according to what is added by Columbus residents and visitors throughout the year.
The Invitational Arts Competition is an unfunded, all-volunteer initiative to bring attention to local, grassroots, community-focused arts groups, and the way they make a difference in Columbus both socially and culturally. A Visual Arts Exhibition will take place at the Carnegie Gallery in the old section of the Columbus Main Library, 96 South Grant Avenue, opening on September 6th at 5:30 and running until October 26th.
Celebrate Columbus’s Bicentennial with a historic journey of Columbus as seen through the eyes of artist Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson. Songs for a New Millennium, 1812 – 2012: Works by Aminah Robinson Celebrating 200Columbus opened August 24 at Columbus Museum of Art. Created to coincide with the city’s Bicentennial celebration, this exhibition is a continuation of Aminah’s illustrative stories about family, community, and migration in Columbus.
Indian artist Nikhil Chopra has returned to Columbus for a tour-de-force public performance as part of Finding Time: Columbus Public Art 2012. Chopra will create a 48’ x 132’ monumental drawing on an exterior wall of the Palace Theatre in Downtown Columbus. Made of charcoal, “inside out: As the stars viewed the Palace” will last for months, fading and disappearing eventually due to exposure to the elements.
After a year of planning, the first of a month and a half of 200Columbus Invitational Arts Competition events is less than a week away! Here’s a sneak preview of The Performing Arts Showcase: August 25th, 7pm, at the Columbus Performing Arts Center, 549 Franklin Ave, just east of the Main Library.
