Telling the Hilltop Story!

We always say in the Zone, "The story we tell about ourselves is the story others will tell about us." Well, come hear - and tell - that story! Join us for a 200Columbus Bicentennial Celebration of storytellers on the Hilltop: "Intimate Accounts of the Hilltop's Past and Present." Not only do we want to present our current collection of Hilltop stories, but hope to record the stories of participants who are willing to share.

October 24, 2012 Premiere inspired by Columbus bicentennial

Xclaim Dance will pay homage to Columbus' Bicentennial with "Soul of the City," which will be performed at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 26 and 27, and 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28. The performance "celebrates the city of Columbus, the movements and mindsets that shaped generations," according to the troupe's website.

October 15, 2012 » Columbus Bicentennial: City of the Future Ohio Memory

Fifty years ago–during Columbus’s sesquicentennial–the October 14th issue of Columbus Dispatch Magazine included an interesting feature looking at the “Columbus of the future.” The article, titled “Columbus looks ahead,” featured experts discussing the changes the capital city could expect over the next half century. The illustrations of the city in 1992 included visions of the city 500 years after its namesake landed in the Americas, while other predictions revolved around how Columbus would be different by the year 2000. Let’s take a look at some of the ideas that have come to pass, and those we’re still waiting on!

New Public Artwork Installed in Downtown Alley

The installation of public art in Downtown Columbus has been on a roll in 2012 thanks to the Finding Time project, and the newest addition to the series is titled ”Buckle”, created by local artist Candace Black.

October 1, 2012 CAP UP Window Art Displays Unveiled, Winners Announced

The latest Downtown public artwork display was launched on Tuesday evening as the CAP UP project was officially unveiled. Ten storefront windows were converted into temporary sidewalk-facing galleries where local artists have installed three dimensional displays that celebrate 200Columbus, the city’s bicentennial. In addition to Tuesday’s unveiling, prizes were awarded to the best displays as judged by a panel of jurors. Criteria for judging was based on quality of work, technical skill, appropriateness of space and inclusion of the 200Columbus theme.

September 21, 2012 Columbus Historical Society celebrates city’s culinary heritage at annual fundraiser

The Columbus Historical Society (CHS) will showcase local restaurants that have contributed to the cuisine and history of the Capital City for more than 25 years at Savor the City: Classic Columbus Cocktails and Cuisine — its annual fundraising event being held Thursday, October 4 from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at COSI — the new home of the CHS gallery.

With buzz around our much-anticipated Annie Leibovitz exhibition building to a roar, we thought what better way to take a bit of inspiration from her wide-ranging and compelling work and apply a little of that to our great city during its 200th birthday? And so 200 Cameras was born.

September 14, 2012 Central Ohioans surpass volunteer challenge goals

Between Aug. 25 and Tuesday, 28,435 people volunteered on a range of projects across the Columbus metropolitan area for the first Columbus Volunteer Challenge. Their donations of time, goods, and services were part of the year-long 200Columbus, a bicentennial celebration of the city. The high number of volunteers exceeded expectations of the city of Columbus.

September 13, 2012 ‘Finding Time’ generates sentence, celebrates Columbus Bicentennial with TRANSIT ARTS, Janet Zweig

As part of Columbus’ Bicentennial celebration, “Finding Time: Columbus Public Art 2012” joined with Brooklyn artist Janet Zweig and local organization TRANSIT ARTS to bring a new public art project to the capital city. “Columbus Never…” is a public art project conceived by Zweig that, once completed, will be a generative sentence that will change over time according to what is added by Columbus residents and visitors throughout the year.

September 4, 2012 200Columbus Invitational Arts Competition: Visual Arts Exhibition Preview

The Invitational Arts Competition is an unfunded, all-volunteer initiative to bring attention to local, grassroots, community-focused arts groups, and the way they make a difference in Columbus both socially and culturally. A Visual Arts Exhibition will take place at the Carnegie Gallery in the old section of the Columbus Main Library, 96 South Grant Avenue, opening on September 6th at 5:30 and running until October 26th.

August 28, 2012 Columbus Museum of Art Honors City's Bicentennial with new Works by Artist Aminah Robinson

Celebrate Columbus’s Bicentennial with a historic journey of Columbus as seen through the eyes of artist Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson. Songs for a New Millennium, 1812 – 2012: Works by Aminah Robinson Celebrating 200Columbus opened August 24 at Columbus Museum of Art. Created to coincide with the city’s Bicentennial celebration, this exhibition is a continuation of Aminah’s illustrative stories about family, community, and migration in Columbus.

August 23, 2012 Dramatic Public Art Performance Downtown August 23 – 26

Indian artist Nikhil Chopra has returned to Columbus for a tour-de-force public performance as part of Finding Time: Columbus Public Art 2012. Chopra will create a 48’ x 132’ monumental drawing on an exterior wall of the Palace Theatre in Downtown Columbus. Made of charcoal, “inside out: As the stars viewed the Palace” will last for months, fading and disappearing eventually due to exposure to the elements.

Here’s a sneak preview of The Performing Arts Showcase: August 25th, 7pm, at the Columbus Performing Arts Center, 549 Franklin Ave, just east of the Main Library.
